The Portchester Players' Hampshire Theatre Group

Born in the lounge bar of a smoky pub in the early 1960s, Hampshire theatre group the Portchester Players are celebrating more than 50 years in the business. Two of its founder members are still involved in the group today. The group is quite family orientated and there are one or two Players families who have produced third generation Players!

We have also had several members move into the professional world - both front and back stage - and we always keep an avuncular eye on their exploits. Until very recently, our home was the Portchester Community Centre but we have recently moved to the Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham.

About The Portchester Players

Over the years, the group has tackled pretty much all forms of theatre, but we initially became well known for our Pantos and Music Halls. We now also enjoy putting on a wide range of plays and the occasional musical. Very active in Hampshire amateur theatre, the Players usually enter the annual Totton Drama festival, which is the first round of the All England Drama festival.

Whilst we have won at Totton several times, we had particularly successful years in 2004 and 2006 where, in both cases, we made it right through to the semi-finals in both cases and won a clutch of awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director. We are very proud to represent the best of amateur theatre in Hampshire.

The years roll by, people (and audiences!) come and go but we like to think that the Players will soldier on for at least another 50 years. If you have never seen a PP production - why not come along and see us soon?

If you would like to be on our mailing list then please drop us an email at
Jase.christopher1967@yahoo.co.uk so that we can always keep you informed. We welcome contact from you whether you are just interested in finding out more about amateur dramatics groups or actually want to join our Hampshire theatre group. Plays from our Hampshire theatre group are wide ranging and range from drama to comedy. We are sure that you will find an area that interests you.

Our Current Production

'Bakewell Bake Off', directed by Jacqueline Arnott
Take 7 eager contestants, 3 feuding judges, 1 bewildered host - mix together in a small village. Add the pressure of a baking competition and you have the perfect recipe for an hilarious musical comedy. The small English village of Bakewell is holding its annual baking competition and the eclectic and eccentric group of contestants are each hoping that their baking skills will impress the judges.

Come and join the folk of Bakewell for their annual bake off, where signature bakes combine with song and dance in a fantastic feast of fun.

Tickets available from the Ashcroft Arts Centre, or ring the Box Office on 01329 223100

Our Next Production

'Not About Heroes' by Stephen MacDonald. Directed by Jason Christopher.

A play about the unique friendship between celebrated WW1 poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon.

8th, 9th and 10th November 2018.

Curtain Call Awards 2014
Graham Robertson received the award for "Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy" for his sensitive portrayal of the role of John in our prodiction of Calendar Girls.

We think this represents a real achievement, bearing in mind the number of Calendar Girls productions in the area in the same time period.

Well done Mr Robertson!

Get Involved!

You can get involved with The Portchester Players Theatre Group in four different ways:

Being a full member allows the fullest participation in the company, including acting. We are always on the lookout for new members - particularly MEN. Entry to the group is by audition, which takes the form of:

song
If possible we like people to bring along a prepared song, but many people - especially if they're first-timers - just sing a well-known song like 'Happy Birthday'.

sight-reading
We provide the words and give you a short while to read it through before you perform it.

movement
A very simple routine, designed to assess whether you have 2 (or more!) left feet.

We welcome all - from beginners to experienced actors and actresses. For beginners, the audition is designed to assess your potential rather than your current ability.

Allows you to do everything BUT act. Designed for people who want to help out backstage.

This might include:

  • Scenery construction / painting
  • Props
  • Sound
  • Lighting
  • Front of house / Box office
  • Wardrobe
  • Publicity

and so on...

We are always glad of additional back stage support - particularly set construction and wardrobe.
