Born in the lounge bar of a smoky pub in the early 1960s, Hampshire theatre group the
Portchester Players are celebrating more than 50 years in the business. Two of its founder
members are still involved in the group today. The group is quite family orientated and there are one or two Players families who have
produced third generation
We have also had several members move into the professional world - both front and back stage - and we always keep an avuncular eye on their exploits. Until very recently, our home was the Portchester Community Centre but we have recently moved to the Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham.
Over the years, the group has tackled pretty much all forms of theatre, but we initially became well known for our
Pantos and Music Halls. We now also enjoy putting on a wide range of plays and the occasional musical.
Very active in Hampshire amateur theatre, the Players usually enter the annual Totton Drama festival, which is the
first round of the All England Drama festival.
Whilst we have won at Totton several times, we had particularly successful years in 2004 and 2006 where, in both cases,
we made it right through to the semi-finals in both cases and won a clutch of awards for Best Actor, Best Actress,
Best Supporting Actress and Best Director. We are very proud to represent the best of amateur theatre in Hampshire.
The years roll by, people (and audiences!) come and go but we like to think that the Players will soldier on for at least another 50 years. If you have never seen a PP production - why not come along and see us soon? If you would like to be on our mailing list then please drop us an email at Jase.email@example.com so that we can always keep you informed. We welcome contact from you whether you are just interested in finding out more about amateur dramatics groups or actually want to join our Hampshire theatre group. Plays from our Hampshire theatre group are wide ranging and range from drama to comedy. We are sure that you will find an area that interests you.
Curtain Call Awards 2014
Graham Robertson received the award for "Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy" for his sensitive portrayal of the role of John in our prodiction of Calendar Girls.
We think this represents a real achievement, bearing in mind the number of Calendar Girls productions in the area in the same time period.
Well done Mr Robertson!
Being a full member allows the fullest participation in the company, including acting.
We are always on the lookout for new members - particularly MEN.
Entry to the group is by audition, which takes the form of:
If possible we like people to bring along a prepared song, but many people - especially if they're first-timers - just sing a well-known song like 'Happy Birthday'.
We provide the words and give you a short while to read it through before you perform it.
A very simple routine, designed to assess whether you have 2 (or more!) left feet.
We welcome all - from beginners to experienced actors and actresses. For beginners, the audition is designed to assess your potential rather than your current ability.
Allows you to do everything BUT act. Designed for people
who want to help out backstage.
This might include:
and so on...
We are always glad of additional back stage support - particularly set construction and wardrobe.
